To celebrate Black History Month, three York United FC players sat down to discuss the person that has greatly influenced and inspired them.

Defender Roger Thompson tapped into his Jamaican roots and chose Bob Marley, passionately describing how it was the singer/songwriter's continuous message of freedom and togetherness that resonated so strongly with him.

"He sings about real life situations and people took that to heart," he says.

"It really hits the soul when you can relate to his music and I think that's why he was able to connect with a lot of people worldwide. He wasn't on one side or the other - he was for the people. He was very big on wanting freedom and on Sunday evenings, everyone in Jamaica would play football. It was a thing for everyone to play. Bob Marley really loved football as well. Everyone would get together and play. It brought the communities together."

"He tried to make everyone aware that there are people being oppressed and that we could come together and change that and help make the world a better place."
